We run four servers in-house, one for Nanopore basecalling and the other three for genomics and metagenomics pipelines. By providing rental service of our servers, we wish to enable more people to analyze their sequence data at will and hassle-free.

High-end servers cater to these needs with advanced CPUs, GPUs, and optimized software that can handle the complexity and diversity of genomic data analysis. Moreover, the urgency in fields like clinical diagnostics and infectious disease research underscores the need for rapid processing, where high-end servers can significantly shorten analysis time, enabling timely decision-making.

Bioinformatics Server Rental

The acquisition and operation of high-end bioinformatics servers represent a significant financial investment, as the upfront costs of purchasing state-of-the-art hardware can be prohibitively high. Additionally, opting for cloud-based services provided by companies like Amazon and Microsoft incurs substantial ongoing expenses due to high rental fees for computing time and data storage, especially given the extensive resources required for comprehensive DNA analysis. This cost barrier can limit access for smaller research institutions or individual labs.

Usage and Practices


  1. Calculate the length of the rental period, min. unit as one day.
  2. Contact info@mbioworks to obtain a user account that is only valid for the designated period. 
  3. Connect to the server using ssh.
  4. Download the user’s data using the provided Dropbox connection point or the user’s own cloud account.
  5. Install softwares with sudo previliges.
  6. Analyze the data and save the results.
  7. Upload any results to a Dropbox connection point for transferring to the user’s own computers.
  8. The rental period ends and the whole server will be recovered using mirror disks to the original state with all programs installed and the user’s data deleted. 


Policies and rules:

  1. The whole server is at the individual user’s disposal. 
  2. The CPU and RAM’s usage and their temperatures and the disk’s free space will be monitored in the background.
  3. It’s the user’s own responsibility to keep the system healthy during the rental period. Call-up service will incur reasonable charges. Hardware related issues are exeption.
  4. Users are welcome to share the computational resources with anyone. A setup fee will apply if additional accounts are needed.
  5. The servers are only intended for bioinformatics purposes. Other types of use are strictly prohibited. Any violation will trigger an immediate termination of the rental agreement.
  6. No user data nor programs installed by users will be retained on the server.
